Dysmenorrhea, also known as menstrual cramps and menstrual pain, is characterized by painful cramps in the abdomen and pelvic area associated with menstruation. While dysmenorrhea often coincides with menstruation, it can also precede menstruation by several days. Dysmenorrhea can range from mild to severe and feature different kinds of pain including throbbing, nauseating, burning, and shooting pain.
