Xerostomia, also known as dry mouth or cottonmouth, is a medical term referring to a subjective symptom of dryness in the mouth. Dry mouth is a common problem that can caused by a number of different factors including a reduction in the quantity of saliva produced and/or a change in the composition of saliva. Dry mouth can also be present with no identifiable cause in people with normal saliva production.
