Cold Sores

Cold sores, also known as fever blisters or oral herpes, are an infection to the lips, mouth, or gums caused by the herpes simplex virus. Cold sores generally last a couple of weeks, but the herpes simplex virus remains dormant in the nerve tissues in the face and can periodically reactivate and cause sores to redevelop. Unlike canker sores, cold sores are highly contagious and can be transmitted even when the herpes simplex virus is dormant and no cold sores are visible.
