Canker sores, also known as aphthous ulcers, are painful open mouth sores. Unlike cold sores, canker sores are not contagious. While the cause of canker sores can often not be determined, stress, hormonal changes, and lack of certain vitamins such as iron, folic acid, and vitamin b12 may contribute to the development of canker sores.
